I Walk The Fields Alone

I Walk The Fields Alone

In the beginning, God created man, but seeing him so feeble, He gave him the dog.
Alphonse Toussenel

I Walk The Fields Alone*

I laid my friend to rest today
His suffering is no more
No longer beside me at every step
I walk the fields alone

He watched my every move
And left no path unguarded
A constant companion on every trip
I walk the fields alone

The end was hard he was very frail
He lived his life to the fullest
His pain is ended I'm glad for that
But mine has just started

I walk the fields without my friend
I feel his presence still
In the shadows I see him roam
And frolic in the meadow

I walk the fields without my friend
There will never be another
A life made richer for his presence
I walk the fields alone

My buddy to the end
I'll remember all the good times
And forget that we are parted
A better friend no one could have

I walk the fields alone

Petros has been homesteading for more than 25 years. He started part-time while working 12 hours a day in the "real" world. However, he transitioned to a full-time homesteader about a decade ago and gets to work 24x7x365. He considers this an improvement.

  1. This would be beautiful framed on the wall with Chief’s photo. Hardly a day goes by that I don’t miss my old guy. I haven’t put my grief into words, because I get incredibly emotional. Beautiful poem.
